CAN

Touching Lives and Changing Futures through the delivery of quality services to those affected by drugs, alcohol and homelessness

CAN is an independent, regional charity, established in 1972, providing a range of drug, alcohol and homelessness services throughout Northamptonshire, Luton and Bedfordshire. It’s overall objective is to prevent and reduce the harm caused by drug and alcohol abuse to individuals, their families and the wider community. CAN's services are as holistic as possible to ensure that individuals can achieve realistic and lasting change in their lives.

Securing the funding of services is a constant challenge and it can be hard for people to understand the effects that drug and alcohol misuse can have on people, their families, friends, employers, colleagues and the wider community.

The funds raised through CAN’s walking challenges are essential to the continuation of the charity’s crucial services to children and families.

CAN was the first drug and alcohol agency to develop a structured approach to working with the children of substance misusing parents. This pioneering work seeks to limit the potential and actual damage caused to children - keeping them ‘safe’; contributing to a more stable and happy home; improving children’s attendance; behaviour and ability to concentrate at school and leading to improved and sustainable outcomes for the parents and family.

CAN is currently working with 32 children, a large proportion of them are on the Child Protection Register and have additional special needs. CAN provides specialist Family and Children’s workers and it is imperative that this work continues.
We rely so much on the willingness and generosity of the public and organisations in supporting our fundraising events. We hope that you will become part of that support through your participation in the Inca Trail 2007.

“One of the strengths of CAN’s work is the recognition of the value of peer support and counselling in fostering parental resilience. Providing support groups for mothers and fathers and accessible counselling opportunities for both adults and children increases families’ chances of moving on and helps to prevent family breakdown”
Michele Wates, co-author of a knowledge review for the Social Care Institute for Excellence
